CHAPTER 15

Henry V and the fruits of legitimacy

By the end of 2 Henry IV, the result of the transactions between Hal and Hostpur and between the prince and his two father figures, Henry IV and Falstaff, was something like a complete congruence, if not exactly between the king’s two bodies, then certainly between the private virtues of the prince and the effective exercise of his public authority. The effects of those transformations and that congruence are displayed throughout Henry V, which, alone amongst the plays under discussion in this book, gives us a fully worked out portrait of successful monarchical rule.
